Credit for Prior Learning
The School of New Resources recognizes the value of experience which adults bring with them into a degree program. Thus, the School has always had a portfolio process by which adult students submit requests for credits based on learning from work and life experience. In the words of John Dewey, “ … there is an intimate and necessary relation between the processes of actual experience and education.” The portfolio process is an opportunity to articulate and claim college-level learning acquired outside formal programs of higher education.
Students who elect to pursue prior learning credits through the portfolio process must successfully complete the course, Prior Learning: Theory and Practice, where they learn to articulate, document, measure, and evaluate experiential learning. This course is offered through our internet based learning management system, Canvas.
Students can earn up to 30 credits for prior learning by submitting one or more portfolios after they have completed Experience, Learning and Identity and Language, Modes of Analysis. Submission of portfolios will not be accepted after a student has earned 90 credits. There are two portfolio submission dates within an academic year, November 1, and March 1.
Portfolios are assessed by an evaluation committee appointed by the Dean. Students will receive a written evaluation of the portfolio once the committee has completed its review. Credits are awarded in academic areas.
Students wishing to appeal the credits awarded for their portfolio should submit a letter appealing the committee’s award to the Associate Dean within four weeks of receipt of the evaluation. Appeals beyond this level are made in writing to the Dean.
Credit by Examination
College Level Examination Program (CLEP), designed by the Educational Testing Service, and College Proficiency Examination (CPE), designed by the New York State Board of Regents, are examinations designed to assess learning in areas where formal instruction has not been received. The policy at the School of New Resources is to accept up to 30 credits for examinations taken with passing scores but no more than 15 credits in the CLEP General Examinations. Credits are also awarded for the Dante Subject Standardized Test based on credit recommendation from ACE (American Council on Education). Students should see a member of the Instructional Staff for more information.
