Celeste Johnson is the Associate Commissioner and Regional Director of the New York State Department of Health’s (NYSDOH) Metropolitan Area Regional Office (MARO). The MARO office serves ten counties in the Mid-Hudson, New York City, and Long Island areas. The office has over 600 staff members who have oversight responsibility for more than fifty percent of New York State’s health provider systems.
Prior to this assignment, she was Director of Government Affairs at the Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA), hospital and long-term care trade association, where she worked with members to track state and federal legislation. She worked extensively with the New York State Legislature and their health and fiscal committees to craft legislation that supported health care providers and services.
Ms. Johnson also served as Chief of Staff to three successive Commissioners at the Department of Health and Hospitals (DH&H) in Boston, Massachusetts. She also worked as a vice president of a New York City based marketing and public relations firm, served as the Director of Public Information for the State of New York Mortgage Agency (SONYMA), and was Scheduling Director for Governor Hugh Carey.
Besides her BA degree from The College of New Rochelle, Ms. Johnson has a master’s degree in communications from Fordham University.
