Melanie Lopez Soto: “Transferring to CNR Was the Best Decision I’ve Ever Made

December 11, 2017

“You are your only limit” is the philosophy that transfer student Melanie Ann Lopez Soto SAS’17 lives by. Originally from Gurabo, Puerto Rico, Melanie transferred to The College of New Rochelle to pursue her dreams of playing volleyball and to one day use the education and practical skills obtained at CNR to become a social media director in New York City.

“The College of New Rochelle provided me with a welcoming environment, a close knit community, and a caring professor-student relationship that my previous institution lacked.”

She credits her professors and coach alike for contributing to her success at the College as a Business major and student athlete.

“The volleyball coach, Alyssa Kaufman, is more than a coach; she’s a mentor. She wants you to do well on the court, in the classroom, and in your career after college.”

CNR’s Ursuline heritage of providing service to others afforded Melanie the opportunity to do just that as a volunteer for Midnight Runs and Habitat for Humanity in New Rochelle, and as a Eucharistic minister. Melanie also serves fellow students as a resident assistant.

Grateful for all of the opportunities CNR has given her, after graduating with her B.S. last May, Melanie decided to remain at CNR and enrolled in the Graduate School’s Communication Management and Media program. She also continued playing volleyball as a member of the Blue Angels team through the fall semester.

To help prospective students who, like her, want to earn their degrees at CNR, Melanie is now working in CNR’s Office of Admission.  In that capacity, she recently returned to her homeland as part of the College’s “WE STAND WITH YOU” initiative to make the admissions process easier for Puerto Rican high school seniors and transfer students whose applications have been hindered by the devastation left in the wake of Hurricanes Irma and Maria.

“Transferring to CNR was the best decision I’ve ever made.”
