CNR Helps Families in Need on Thanksgiving
November 20, 2018
Before dawn on November 20, CNR student leaders and athletes Deja Graham, Darneisha Brice, Aaliyah Fields and Cynthia Almonte, along with alumna and Assistant Swimming Coach Claudia Benitez and Dean of Students Tiffani Blake, traveled to Chelsea Piers in New York City to partner with FeedingNYC for the third consecutive year to provide Thanksgiving meals for families in need.
Each year, FeedingNYC hand delivers thousands of Thanksgiving dinners to those who otherwise may not have a holiday meal. According to the organization, this year, volunteers will deliver “meals, hopes and dreams” to 6,000 of New York City’s homeless. The program that began in 2001 with deliveries to 40 families has now delivered Thanksgiving meals to more than 40,000.
During their morning shift, CNR volunteers assembled boxes and organized food donations to be placed into the boxes along with Thanksgiving crafts and cards they created.
“It was a great experience to see so many willing to help the less fortunate and shows the selflessness of others during the holiday season,” said Graham.
“This act of giving is just one of many ways that our students learn the power of sharing our gifts with our brothers and sisters in need as God calls us to." said Blake. “Again this year, our work with FeedingNYC allowed students to help bless thousands with a nourishing meal for the holiday.”
